Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

In adults, ADD manifests or can manifest as difficulties with paying attention, organizing, making decisions, and keeping relationships are all manifestations of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). You can't concentrate. Most of the time, you feel either bored or irritable - you just want to do something else, right now. You can't seem to finish what you start. You answer questions before they're asked, impatient for the person speaking to just get to the point. Your desk is mess, and so are your relationships.

In children, these same behaviors may result in poor performance in school, conflict with teachers or their peers, or power struggles with parents. No matter what you do as a parent, you may feel frustrated and discouraged; your child seems out of control and unmanageable. Relationships in your family may suffer as you pay more and more attention to one child.

Untreated, ADD can wreak havoc in your personal and professional life. It can affect your health, when you can't keep appointments; your financial well-being, when you can't manage to balance your checkbook; and your self-esteem, when you come to believe that you are bad - or stupid - because you don't function like other people.

Therapy can help you make practical changes and form new, regular habits that help you take control of your behavior. A therapist can help determine if medication is needed and help you deal with the impact ADD has on your self-esteem.
