Couples Counseling

Creating a successful couple relationship is challenging! Partners begin relationships with many hopes, seeing the best in each other. It is common for relationships to experience a "honeymoon" period where partners overlook each other's flaws. As partners come to know each other more fully, disappointments naturally arise. They may find that they repeatedly feel threatened by each other in familiar and predictable ways: when in conflict, she may try to engage him and he may close down, cutting off contact. These cycles can escalate over time to where both partners feel despairing, distrustful, or isolated. With the added burden of life's routines and stresses, a crisis can occur.

Couples come to therapy together when both partners understand that something in their relationship no longer works. They may need help communicating, or with resolving conflicts over important everyday issues such as money, parenting, or intimacy. They may need help learning how to deal with anger and frustration in a more positive way to break the cycle of conflict. They may want to enhance their sexual relationship and develop a deeper connection.

Therapists who work with couples support both partners equally, without judging, blaming, or taking sides. They can create an environment of support in which you and your partner can begin to feel more secure and work toward mutual understanding, acceptance, and greater intimacy, rediscovering friendship, passion and teamwork once again.
