Sexuality
Sexuality is one of the most misunderstood human needs. Our culture tends to make intimacy and sexual desire all about sex: are you getting "enough" sex, is your partner wanting "too much" sex, are you having the "right kind" of sex? We have lost touch with the fullness of our sexual nature and the tremendous potential it holds for pleasure, connection, and intimacy.
Sexuality is a spectrum. It is about the sexual act, and it is also about touch, delight, imagination, creativity, self-revelation, the unknown, feelings of love and connection . . . Our sexuality is complex and multidimensional, yet our culture often makes it one-dimensional. We grow up without access to the fullness of how to be sexual beings
Sexuality used as a weapon against you can negatively impact our intimate lives. Your body and imagination become dangerous places, and the safest thing to do is stay away from contact with others. Sexual abuse, dangerous touch, and negative messages about body image can result in self-esteem issues, confusion about what your body means to you, eating disorders, and other problems.
Therapy can help you understand the forces that brought you to where you are today. In therapy, you can resolve conflicts that interfere with sexual functioning. You can also expand your understanding of what it means to be sexual and sensual, to desire and be desired, to be truly intimate with yourself and another.
