Self-Esteem
"You'll never be able to do this. You're so stupid! Why bother? You're not smart enough to do that. You klutz!" If these messages sound familiar, you've probably heard them for much of your life. When you hear them long enough - from parents, siblings, even friends - they may quietly transform from other's opinions into your opinion of yourself, even though they have nothing to do with the way you really are.
Self-esteem is what we think about ourselves. Overly high self-esteem sounds arrogant. Low self-esteem sends negative messages that discourage us before we even begin. Healthy self-esteem sends healthy, positive messages about ourselves: "Go for it! You can do it. With practice, you'll learn how."
What we think about ourselves and our capabilities has a profound impact on how we live our lives and what we can accomplish. We can fail by consistently overestimating or underestimating our abilities, and these failures tend to reinforce our feelings about ourselves.
Therapy offers a way to understand who we really are and what we are really capable of achieving. It can help you to tease out the messages you received from others from your own emerging and more accurate sense of who you are. You can learn to grieve what you never received and to take risks to create the life you have always imagined possible.
What we think about ourselves has a profound impact on how we live our lives and what we can accomplish. Therapy offers a way to understand who we really are and helps define what our true potential is.
