Anxiety

Most people feel anxious about something at some time in their life. It's natural to feel nervous or shy in new situations, to feel uptight around someone who is critical of you, to want to avoid dangerous locations, or to have occasional bouts with sleeplessness.

Anxiety becomes a problem when it interferes with your enjoyment of life and your connections to others, or when it prevents you from pursuing your desires. Worry, tension, avoidance of certain situations, embarrassment, shyness, difficulties with speech, thoughts that won't go away, restlessness, poor sleep and nightmares ... these are all manifestations of anxiety. Anxiety can also wear down your nervous system, leading to fatigue and physical illness. Panic attacks are an extreme form of anxiety.

We all handle anxiety differently. Some people isolate themselves because they believe that they need to hide what they are experiencing, or because it feels too threatening to venture out. Others try to enlist friends and loved ones to help protect them from the source of their anxiety, which can lead to difficulties in relationships. Still others turn to various addictions in an attempt to calm their symptoms. While these strategies may bring temporary relief, over time they tend to make matters worse.

You can get help and recover from debilitating anxiety. Psychotherapy is very effective in helping to find the way out of the maze.
