Men's Issues

What does it really mean to be a man? The messages we get often seem impossible to reconcile. Be vulnerable, yet appear to be control. Work hard to support your family, and spend more time with them too. Express your emotions, but without appearing or feeling weak.

The issues at the heart of this central question concern intimacy, identity, and emotional truths: My wife wants more than I can give her, but I can't tell her how alone and scared I sometimes feel. I'd like to be closer to my children, but I don't want them to think I'm a pushover. I'm spending all my time at work because I feel more competent there than I do at home. I can't talk to my friends about how I really feel; they might think less of me.

Men's and women's brains are wired very differently. Research has shown that our seemingly calm or impassive facial expressions may not reflect the distress or panic we are feeling. Compounding this, we learn from an early age to be active rather than to talk about our feelings. It's no wonder our loved ones are sometimes shocked when we suddenly get defensive or explode.

Therapy offers the opportunity to sort through, understand, and express the rich range of emotions you have inside with the help of a person who understands how it feels to embark on the adventure of uniting your inner and outer worlds.
