LGBTQ/Sexual Orientation

Perhaps you noticed early in life that your sexual orientation was different than that of most of the people around you. You may have felt isolated for many years because you had no language to talk about it, or because talking itself felt dangerous.

Coming to terms with who you are and celebrating that openly is joyous, but it also means confronting the judgments, opinions, and even hatreds that may be directed at you by family, friends, and coworkers. Once you come out you have to deal with many issues: how the state views you, how your workplace views you, the question of marriage and children, the legal battles over same-sex marriage, the pervasive and troubling feeling of not being an equal among equals.

Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer (LGBTQ) individuals have unique dilemmas to grapple with in addition to the everyday struggles of life. These struggles can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and depression. It is perhaps not surprising that adolescents who are coming to terms with their alternate sexuality often express suicidal thoughts. If you are struggling with issues surrounding your sexuality, or you suspect your teen is, therapy can help.

Therapy provides a protected space in which you can safely develop your sense of self without damaging intrusions from people in your environment. Therapy can help you work out the many transitions you will go through as you emerge into your fullness and take your place proudly in your chosen communities.
