Creativity/Creative Blocks

Sometimes creative ideas and inspiration seem to flow through you effortlessly and take form in writing, in art, in music or dance. Sometimes ... well ... they just ... get ... stuck. Where creativity once felt natural and exciting, now it feels like the well has run dry. At these moments, it may feel like no amount of effort can prime the pump. Like Chinese finger cuffs, the harder you pull the harder it is to get out.

Creative blocks can be manifestations of feelings inside that you may have ignored or pushed down or hidden from yourself, and which are now crying out for attention. Anxieties about not being good enough, talented enough or worthy enough can stop you in your tracks. Perfectionism, fear of criticism, or a harsh inner censor, can cause you to stop working before a new creation has a chance to come to fruition.

Therapy can help you sort out the issues that are preventing you from expressing yourself creatively. The simple act of talking to someone who listens deeply to you can reveal whether the creative forces inside you need time to regenerate or whether the way you relate to your self is preventing creative expression. Together, you and your therapist can then explore your underlying impediments to creativity or learn to stay with the pregnant pause as something new takes shape inside you.
